Lionel Frederick Cole

Lionel Frederick Cole was born as the fifth child of Edward and Paulina Nancy Cole in 1931. His three older brothers named Eddie, Ike and Nat are all musicians. Freddy Cole began studying piano at the age of five. 'Music surrounded me everywhere', reminsces Freddy Cole. Daily guests of Cole’s family were such jazz celebrities as Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Lionel Hampton.

When Freddy Cole turned 18 he started studying at the Roosevelt Institute in Chicago. In 1951 he moved to New York where he continued to study at the Juilliard Music School. In addition he received a Masters degree at the New England Conservatoire.
Freddy Cole has performed everywhere in the world, he has made numerous recordings since 1952. His elegant and at the same time husky voice is one of the most distinguished in the jazz world.
