The Cleveland Orchestra will perform two essential works by Brahms: his Second Symphony and the Tragic Overture, both sharing similar musical themes and depicting a pastoral atmosphere.

It is common in music to use pre‐existing compositional material to give it a second life. Brahms created his Tragic Overture with themes borrowed from his Second Symphony, composed three years earlier.

This concert will also present the French premiere of Jörg Widmann's Teufel Amor, inspired by the remaining fragments of a Poem by Schiller.
