Although only Opus 18, the Quartet in B‐flat Major already signals the forward‐looking aesthetic that would become Beethoven's signature. From the 'heroic' middle period, the 'Serioso' Quartet delves deep into the struggles of humanity, finding cathartic release at last in the final measures. Finally, in the late Quartet in E‐flat major, harmonic and structural absolutes are discarded in favor of inspired exploration.
