Written in the weeks following his marriage, Schumann's 'Twelve Poems, op.35' contain some of the composer's most tender — and subtly suggestive — music. Fauré's 'Five Songs 'Of Venice'' contain all the lush sensuality of that city's fabled Carnevale, while his setting of Verlaine's poems dedicated to the poet's future wife, like those of Reynaldo Hahn on the same texts, breathe an uxorious serenity, punctuated with occasional outpourings of joy.
