The work follows the events of the courtesan Violetta, who presents herself as a dissolute lady who lives proudly free from any bond. Later, however, she is unexpectedly overwhelmed by her love for Alfredo, an upper‐class young man who warns her that she should take care of her health, as her lifestyle has led to her. to contract tuberculosis. Violetta renounces her status and her independence, leaving Paris to settle in the countryside with Alfredo. Her father, however, contacts her to ask her to break up with Alfredo, because their relationship is compromising the honor of her family, preventing Alfredo's sister from getting married. Alfredo is unaware of why his lover broke up with him and only discovers the truth when it is too late.
