Madrid's magnificent opera house, presents Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel staged by Laurent Pelly in a production from the Glyndebourne Festival.
The combination of German folk songs with refined Wagnerian orchestration resulted in a masterly formula for establishing Hansel and Gretel, one of the first Märchenopern of the 19th century, among the most widely performed of the lyrical repertoire. Defined as “a masterpiece of eminent quality, original in everything, new and authentically German” by Richard Strauss, this version of the tale by the Brothers Grimm quickly won over audiences.
