Philippe Herreweghe conducts deFilharmonie and mezzo‐soprano Dagmar Peckova, performing Mahler's stunning Kindertotenlieder in Brussels.

Even when he did not intend it, Mahler's music was about himself.
Three years after his lieder cycle about children's deaths, his own little daughter died. "It hurt to write the songs and it will hurt to hear them," he stated. His disconcerting Kindertotenlieder show that what is terribly serious can also be amazingly beautiful. It may take you a whole Bruckner symphony to recover.
