Stefano Montanari conducts a stellar cast of soloists, including Karine Deshayes and Julien Behr, in a striking new production of Gluck's innovative opera, 'Alceste', by Alex Ollé from the theater collective, La Fura dels Baus.
'Alceste' tells the story of the noble queen, who sacrifices herself in order to save her husband from a certain death. When King Admeto comes back from the underworld, he discovers the tragic loss of his beloved, and implores Apollo to let him descend again.
With 'Alceste', Gluck sought to reform the genre, putting the music at the drama's service, with the focus on the psychology of the characters and their frailty.
