Nowhere in all his work did Tchaikovsky seem to express himself as fully, as absolutely as in The Queen of Spades.

Sensing this, he made no secret that he considered it his masterpiece. Of course, he explained that his last symphony, the famous Pathetic, had an autobiographical character. But no purely instrumental work could paint the complete picture of this man of the theatre, a man so passionately theatrical. And his reflection is not to be found in his characters, neither in Hermann whose death he composed in tears, nor in Lisa throwing herself into the dark waters of the Neva, but in the entire work, in its flow, as torrential as the great river itself, in its wild and uncontrollable currents. It is also in the depiction of Saint Petersburg, the city that Peter the Great had had built in the far north of his empire, in the ice and swamps: a city separated from land and hence from reason.

Brandon Jovanovich and Violeta Urmana are the ideal performers of this nightmarish and bewitching opera.

Excellent. Except the gentlemen at the 'Will Call' window refused at first to accept your confirmation since it was for "The Queen of Spades" which he could not (or did not want to) identify with the french title "La Dame de Pique"
