The Song of the Night, or the Third Symphony, by Karol Szymanowski, in which the sound of the orchestra and the voices of the soloist (tenor) and choir blend into a charming amalgam, is an extraordinary musical setting of poetry by the great Persian poet and Sufi Jalal’al Din Rumi, in a Polish translation by Tadeusz Miciński.

Numerous specialists designate the Four Last Songs, based on texts by Joseph von Eichendorff and Hermann Hesse, as Strauss’s own requiem. The first of the songs was not performed until after the composer’s death, with the premiere being given by Kirsten Flagstad conducted by the celebrated Wilhelm Furtwängler.
