The anniversary of Dimitri Shostakovich's 100th birthday in 2006 inspired ceremonies and concerts throughout the world as well as inspiring a new film about the life and work of this great Soviet composer. Other movies about Shostakovich by Sokurov or Larry Weinstein give a deep view into the tragic of beeing being the favorite composer of the cruelest dictator of the 20th century. His work is the mirror of an artist's life in the 20th century and reveals that is is possible to keep human dignity while facing the horror.

Oistrach was an intimate friend of the composer. He deeply knows the fragility of the world in the compositions of Shostakovich and performed some of them for the first time.
