Maestro Gatti leads the RPO in three desert‐island classics from the English and Russian repertoires. Each work, in its own way, represents a milestone in the life of its composer, from the Haydnesque joie de vivre of Prokofiev’s First Symphony to the unashamed lyricism of Tchaikovsky’s popular piano concerto. Elgar’s much‐loved ‘enigmatic’ orchestral portraits of his friends, which similarly represented a major break‐through for the composer, include the intensely moving and quintessentially Elgarian 'Nimrod'.
