Valery Gergiev leads the Orchestra of the Mariinski Theatre in a programme featuring the pearls of Russian classical music. Gergiev opts for three of the greatest Russian composers: Rimsky‐Korsakov, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky.The orchestra of the Mariinski Theatre starts with a suite from The fairy tale by Tsar Saltan of Rimsky‐Korsakov. The entire opera recently appeared on a well‐received DVD, under the direction of Gergiev. From Stravinsky you can hear the neo‐classical Symphony in C. The highlight is Tchaikovsky's sensational and overwhelming Sixth Symphony, 'Pathétique'. In recent years, conductor Gergiev has brought the city of St Petersburg to unprecedented musical bloom with new halls for the Mariinski Theatre, and new ensembles to play an even wider repertoire.
