The Inferno, Purgatory, Paradise. After Inferno and Purgatorio, Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten conclude their exploration of Dante’s Divine Comedy with what in our era is the most problematic of these poems.
While the Inferno and Purgatory, worlds of suffering and loss, find an immediate echo in our contemporary experience, how do we today envision Paradise, world of peace and love without rage or hate? And what if it turns out to be but a vast expanse consumed by boredom?
It is in the flesh, the human, the body of the dancer that the two choreographers seek the beatitude promised by Dante, in the flesh shared with the other, the brother, where we find the paradise of here and now in the body’s movement, this movement that inspires Dante in the last tercet: “But now was turning my desire and will, even as a wheel that equally is moved, the love which moves the sun and the other stars.”
