Closing Concert: Britten, War Requiem

Britten's “War Requiem”, op. 66 will be performed by the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra at its Closing Concert of the Season.
It has already become a tradition that Maestro Gintaras Rinkevičius and LSSO prepare an impressive memorable programme with best Lithuanian and foreign musicians for the closing concert of the season every year. This year it is B. Britten’s grandiose “The War Requiem”. The composer was commissioned write it for the ceremony marking the completion of a new cathedral on the site of Coventry Cathedral that was bombed in 1940. Britten chose the structure of the traditional Latin Mass for the Dead. It is scored for three soloists, a chamber orchestra, a full choir and main orchestra, a boys’ choir, and organ. Besides the traditional Latin text the piece is interwoven with nine poems about war by the English poet W. Owen.
