The charismatic Avi Avital is indisputably one of the greatest mandolin players of our time. His recordings for Deutsche Grammophon are celebrated internationally. For this programme, Avital dips a toe into classical music and also explores jazz. Along with jazz pianist Omer Klein he gives a very free performance of several jazz pieces and Israeli songs. But Avital cannot omit Johann Sebastian Bach, his boyhood hero. He has therefore added to the programme a mandolin arrangement of Bach’s Partita Nr. 2, BWV 1004. With the jazzy songs still in mind, Bach’s score has never sounded so playful.
