『椿姫』は、父親ジョルジョ・ジェルモンの反対を押し切り、若き貴族アルフレード・ジェルモンと恋に落ちる遊女の物語です。 この物語は、ニコール・キッドマン主演の映画『ムーラン・ルージュ』や、リチャード・ギアとジュリア・ロバーツ主演の『プリティ・ウーマン』の原作ともなりました。このオペラはフィレンツェ・オペラ・カンパニーによって上演され、各幕の解説は英語で行われます。
