サイモン・ラトル卿は当初から熱意を示した。「このオーケストラの創設は、深く必要とされる構想だ」。2015年に創設されたチネケ！オーケストラは、クラシック音楽における文化的多様性の促進を目標に掲げている。アンサンブルの名称はナイジェリアのイボ語に由来し、「世界を創造し善をもたらす神」を意味する。「チネケ」は驚くべき出来事が起きた時に発せられる感嘆詞でもあり、日本語の「わあ！」に相当する。
民族的に多様な背景を持つ音楽家を主体とし、クラシック音楽の定番作品に加え、過小評価されがちな作曲家の作品をレパートリーに組み込む点で、欧州初のプロオーケストラである。
