When Christiane Eberhardine, wife of Frederick Augustus of Saxony, died on September 5, 1727 many people mourned her with sincere affliction. Bach delivered a funeral cantata whose staggering beauty illustrated his own sorrow. With alternating poignant lamentations and choruses of a powerful fervor, imbued with a great but serene sadness, the Cantor of Leipzig left a masterpiece which he reused later for his Passion according to Saint Mark.
Philippe Herreweghe and his Collegium Vocale Gent perform the cantatas by J.S. Bach with distinct devotion to the genious composer.
