Venice Baroque Orchestra & Giuliano Carmignola: Ambassadors of Baroque Music

Lo spettacolo

Ambassadors of Baroque music encounter three cultures with compositions by Antonio Vivaldi, especially noted for his development of the violin concerto, composer and dancer Jean‐Marie Leclair, founder of the French violin school, as well as the foremost Baroque music exponent, Georg F. Handel.

Founded in 1997 by Baroque scholar and harpsichordist Andrea Marcon, the Venice Baroque Orchestra is recognized as one of the premier ensembles devoted to period instrument performance. The Orchestra has soon received wide critical acclaim for its concert and opera performances in various tours with celebrated soloists (Carmignola, Jaroussky, Capuçon). Committed to the rediscovery of 17th‐ and 18th‐century masterpieces, the orchestra’s compelling programme and unique partnerships with soloists have produced outstanding recordings under illustrious labels and media houses. The ensemble’s performances will also be featured on a Swiss TV in an upcoming documentary on Vivaldi.

The Italian organist, harpsichordist and conductor Andrea Marcon is one of the most acclaimed musicians in early music. He studied organ and harpsichord at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, where he currently teaches. Today, Marcon is widely recognized as a leading interpreter of the Baroque, Classical and early Romantic periods. Over the past years he has been a frequent guest conductor of numerous European orchestras and, since 2012, artistic director of the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada.
Giuliano Carmignola, according to the Gramophone magazine an aristocratic violinist, has been enthralling audiences with his repertoire ranging from Baroque to new music, with an abiding passion for the Vivaldi concertos. His world‐premiere recording of five unknown Vivaldi violin concertos with the Venice Baroque Orchestra was released to great success. Carmignola has also recorded a collection of remarkable pieces by Tartini and Locatelli. For his excellent recordings he has received the German Echo award and the French Diapason d'or. Carmignola sports two instruments, the superb Floreno Guidantus of 1739, and an anonymous 18th‐century violin owned by the late Angelo Ephrikian, who deciphered the first Vivaldi manuscripts.
