Composer‐conductor John Adams' works are famous for being inspired by current events. Tonight he will conduct his own compositions performed by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

His Scheherazade.2 was written for Leila Josefowicz and is based on the the oppression and abuse of women in the Middle East and elsewhere. His Tromba Lontana is a short, soft fanfare to mark the 150th anniversary of the Decleration of Independance when Texas seceded from Mexico in 1836. In Doctor Atomic, Adams wrote a turbulent piece about the excitement and doubts Robert Oppenheimer faced during the first atomic bomb test in 1945.
