Handel's Tamerlano: Theater an der Wien

Lo spettacolo

A star‐studded cast at the Theater an der Wien offers a concert version of Handel's Tamerlano, rich with conflict and complexity.

The political struggle inherent in Tamerlane's victory over the Ottomans was a very popular subject in both literature and theater at the time that Handel composed his opera. Handel's version, though, is unique in that the conflict is also reflected on a personal level. Tamerlane's unscrupulous mission to wed the daughter of Bajazet -- the captured sultan of Turkey -- fails, and the resulting scenes are among Handel's most dramatic.
