Brahms' German Requiem at National Forum of Music

Lo spettacolo

Begin the Lenten period with Brahms' eternally‐popular Ein deutsches Requiem. The acclaimed Giancarlo Guerrero conducts the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic and Choir.

Unusually for a Requiem, Brahms' work does not set the liturgy of the mass for the dead, but instead takes its texts from the Luther Bible. Composed in the aftermath of the deaths of both his mother and his friend, Robert Schumann, Brahms set out to write a work that would be understood by its intended audience, omitting reference to many elements of traditional dogma. Following several less successful premieres, the full score, with added movement for solo soprano, received its premiere in Leipzig in 1869.
