Book 8: Claudio Monteverdi’s Madrigals of Love and War
Lo spettacolo
Brilliant color, high drama, breathtaking melodies, and some of the most daring vocal writing of the early Baroque make Claudio Monteverdi’s Eighth Book of Madrigals an undisputed masterpiece. Selections from this monumental collection, including 'Lamento della Ninfa', 'Altri canti di Marte', 'Ardo e scoprir', and much more will be performed as TENET opens its 2012‐13 season at Columbia University's Italian Academy.
Published in 1638 as Madrigali guerrieri et amorosi (Madrigals of Love and War), Monteverdi set texts by some of the greatest Renaissance and 17th century poets in these striking musical mini‐dramas depicting the metaphorical combat between men and women on the battlefield that is love.
Violinist and conductor Scott Metcalfe joins TENET as the guest musical director along with an all‐star cast of performers drawn from TENET’s annual Green Mountain Project.
