In his later years Berlioz went to Rostow in Russia — a long and dangerous journey at these times. He wanted to hear the original sound of the famous great bells. This little anecdote tells a lot about the charakter of the 'Founder' of Program Music and his understanding of composing. Wagner, Liszt or Bruckner took Berlioz' art of instrumentation as an role model for their own works.
