Giuseppe Verdi's opera was premiered at La Fenice in 1857. It is based on the drama by Andalusian writer Antonio García Gutiérrez, with a libretto by Fancesco Maria Piave.

To close the season, El Teatro Real presents this work as staged by Giancarlo Del Monaco, in a production that premiered in 2002. The large cast of star soloists includes Plácido Domingo.
