Rachmaninov's piano concertos combine superb piano writing with lush and unashamedly romantic tunefulness, and the Second Concerto, which forms an emotionally charged background to David Lean's film Brief Encounter, remains one of the most popular in the repertoire.

Some of the stories in the Arabian Nights collection date back to the first millennium, yet have lost none of their appeal. A number of these tales are brilliantly evoked in Rimsky‐Korsakov's colourful symphonic suite Scheherazade, whose superb orchestration, dramatic sweep and richness of melody have ensured its immortality.
