The French soprano combines silvery tone with intense dramatic engagement — a combination that suits Schubert's dramatic settings of Goethe, such as the eerie Erlkönig or the lovelorn Gretchen am Spinnrade. Liszt, writing in French, Bizet, and Fauré are all familiar territory. Less well‐known, but no less beautiful, is Hans Pfitzner's song cycle Alte Weisen.
