Iolanta, Anna Netrebko debut in Barcelona

О событии

Enjoy this concert version of Iolanta by Tchaikovsky with star soprano Anna Netrebko at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, in the heart of Barcelona.

Anna Netrebko makes her Liceu debut.

This visit from the Mariinsky Theatre's resident companies, complete with their star Anna Netrebko, provides an excellent opportunity to discover this exquisite score by Tchaikovsky, a rare historical treasure of Slav opera which is seldom performed in western opera houses.

Iolanta (Saint Petersburg, 1892) is a delicately refined opera set in medieval times. The Princess Iolanta has been born blind and her father has surrounded her by persons who conceal from her the existence of sight to spare her the pain of knowing she cannot see. A doctor from the East claims to be able to cure her but his remedy will work only if she is aware of her true situation. Her over‐protective father refuses. Then a knight arrives. He realizes Iolanta is blind, falls in love with her, explains to her what light and colours are, and says he wants to marry her. Iolanta's father's fury gives way to general rejoicing when the remedy restores her sight.

Conductor: Valery Gergiev
