Hungarian National Day: Ealing Autumn Festival

The Ealing Autumn Festival offers a full day of music and events to honor Hungarian Day.

In 1989, October 23rd was declared a national holiday in Hungary in remembrance of the spontaneous uprising in 1956. By November 10th, it had been cruelly suppressed so this is not normally a day for rejoicing. However, the Ealing Autumn Festival could not ignore such an important date, and it offers this day of events as a mark of respect for the dignity of the Hungarian people in their times of adversity but also to celebrate joyfully their achievements and their gifts to us — the genius of Hungary.

2.00pm    Franz Liszt the Patriot - in words and music
Liszt spent comparatively little time Hungary but he had a powerful emotional attachment to the country of his birth.

3.00pm    Children of Glory (Szabadság, Szerelem) (2006)
Krisztina Goda’s film tells the remarkable story of the Hungarian water polo team at the 1956 Olympic Games – a tale of national pride in the face of terrible adversity.

7.30pm    Muzsikás
This outstanding folk music ensemble has pioneered – and earned – global acceptance of traditional Hungarian music‐making, touring Europe, North America, the Far East and Australasia. Their musical intensity coupled with breathtaking technical virtuosity makes their performances exciting, inspiring and wholly memorable. If you have not yet heard them, make sure you don’t miss this opportunity.

A Hungarian Day Ticket will give you the opportunity to meet some of the artists taking part in the Festival. You will be offered free VIP refreshments, the best seats for all or any of the day’s events and you will be supporting the Kolik Society and the Hungarian Culture & Heritage Society.
