Мангейм (нем. Mannheim, произносится как Ма́нхайм)- город на самом севере федеральной земли Баден-Вюртенберг в Германии. У этого города также существует прозвище город-квадрат (нем. Quadratestadt), т.к. старый город разделен на похожие по размеру четырехугольные блоки домов. Взглянув на старый город с высоты птичьего полета, вам может показаться, что вы смотрите на закругленную шахматную доску.
В XVIII веке, среди жителей и гостей города были Гёте, Шиллер и Моцарт. В январе 1782 года в городском театре состоялась премьера «Разбойников» Шиллера — драмы, принёсшей ему успех.
В академической музыке выделяют движение, известное как Мангеймская школа, в числе которой Мангеймская капелла (симфонический оркестр — один из лучших в Европе оркестров середины XVIII века). Мангеймская школа считается переходным стилем от барокко к Венскому классицизму (Гайдн, Моцарт, Бетховен). Она играла важную этапную роль в формировании симфонии как музыкального произведения. Руководителем мангеймского оркестра был Ян Вацлав Антонин Стамиц (чеш. Jan Václav Antonín Stamic; нем. Johann Wenzel Anton Stamitz) — известный композитор, скрипач и дирижёр. Он является ярчайшим представителем мангеймской школы, вместе с такими композиторами как его сыновья Карл и Антон Стамиц, Игнац Хольцбауэр, Христиан Каннабих, Франц Ксавер Рихтер, Антон Фильс и др.
