Beethoven/Ravel at Oper Leipzig

О событии

Leipzig celebrates 25 years of sisterhood with Houston. For this reason, the choreographic manuscripts of the two cities come together on this night of ballet.

Uwe Scholz, who worked as a ballet conductor in Leipzig for a long time, created the work 'Seventh Symphony' in 1991. Unlike his predecessor symphonies, Beethoven did not adhere to any non‐musical ideas in the seventh, but created 'pure music'. Scholz took this idea and devoted himself completely to musical poetry without ever succumbing to the temptation of telling an action. The stage and costumes are based on the colorful abstract painting 'Beta Kappa' by Morris Louis.

This contrasts with the ballet piece 'Tu Tu Tu Tu Tu' by Stanton Welch, artistic director of the Houston Ballet. In Ravel's Concerto for Piano in G Major, in which the composer takes up elements of jazz and blues, the dancers play around the stage in brightly coloured tutus in a humorous and sensual choreography. Welch makes use of the classical repertoire of steps, but skillfully exaggerates it with a small wink.
