Jukka‐Pekka Saraste, chief conductor of the WDR Radio Symphony Orchestra Cologne since 2010, interprets works of Beethoven and Richard Strauss on a grand scale.

The two Beethoven works on this program confront, struggle, and achieve; the contrast with Strauss's farewell, his atmospheric Four Last Songs, is extreme. The splendid Finnish soprano Karita Mattila breathes drama and elegance into Strauss's contemplative score.
