Purcell's The Fairy Queen: Theater an der Wien
Sobre o Evento
Offering a different version of the story told in Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream", Purcell's semi‐opera contains many of his finest compositions. Christophe Rousset leads a cast including Anna Prohaska and Kurt Streit.
The genre of the semi‐opera was well‐established during the Restoration in England. For "The Fairy Queen" Purcell used singing, dance, and even spoken dialogue. The compositions range from melancholic elegies, to satirical pieces and colorful instrumental passages. It premiered to great success in 1692 but only had its revival at the beginning of the 20th century.
Sung in English with German surtitles.
