A Struggle Begins (Es erhub sich ein Streit) is the title of the cantata for Saint Michael composed by both Johann Christoph Bach and Johann Sebastian Bach, each in his turn. One recognizes, as in other cantatas written for Saint Michael (BWV 50 and BWV 130), an instrumentation replete with military accents dictated by the passage from the Apocalypse (12, 7‐9) which declares: “And there was war in the heavens. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon.”

One hears this conflict between two opposing forces – good vs. evil – like a fading echo in the contrasting choral masses of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.
