Philharmonic Up‐Close with Ethel Smyth and Richard Strauss

Sobre o Evento

Here, the participating musicians have selected music by Ethel Smyth, who is considered one of the most prominent classical composers today. She studied at the conservatory in Leipzig where she met Dvorák, Tchaikovsky and Grieg. Over time, Ethel Smyth became a notable cultural personality both as a composer and as a leader of the suffragette movement, and she was appointed Dame of the British Empire. Here, we will hear her vivid string quintet.

One of Richard Strauss’ most evocative pieces is Metamorphosen. As the title suggests, this music is in constant change and evolution. It is also a tribute to Beethoven – Strauss quotes Beethoven’s Eroica and fifth symphonies. First we will hear a prelude to Strauss’ opera Capriccio in a version for string sextet.
