Palazzo delle Prigioni

The Palazzo delle Prigioni is located on the banks of the Venetian lagoon, on the Riva degli Schiavoni, and was built to complement the prisons of the nearby Palazzo Ducale. Designed by the architect Antonio da Ponte in 1589 and completed by his nephew in 1614, the palace was the seat of the magistrature in charge of prosecuting common criminals and the surveillance of prisoners. The interior includes several rooms for concerts, exhibitions, and cultural events organised by the Venice Art Club, an association constituted in 1919, such as the Art Exhibition presented by the Taipei Fine Arts Museum of Taiwan at the Venice Biennale which has been held in the palace since 1995.
