Music of the Ottoman Empire: Classical Turkish Music at Carnegie Hall

Sobre o Evento

Discover a new musical universe — that has endured for more than 700 years! The Ahmet Erdoğdular Classical Turkish Music Ensemble is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Ottoman classical music, with particular reference to the classical vocal tradition.

Familiar to audiences in the Venetian Republic, with its strong Byzantine and Ottoman connections, Western music has lost contact with its Eastern sibling over the centuries. Erdoğdular is joined by musicians on the ney, oud, kanun, and kemenche for a program of classical song, ghazals (sung poetry), and music from the Sufi tradition, paying special attention to the music of the Mevlevi, or — as they are better know in the West — the Whirling Dervishes.
