The German tenor's rich voice and dramatic daring has elevated him above his peers in an astonishing range of late‐Romantic and 20th Century roles. In partnership with his former professor, pianist Helmut Deutsch, Kaufmann's renown extends equally to the recital stage, where their joint appreciation and knowledge of the lieder repertoire is perhaps unparalleled today.
