Jirí Belohlávek: Symphony Orchestra of Barcelona

Sobre o Evento

Enjoy a wonderful concert with the Symphony Orchestra of Barcelona, conducted by Jirí Belohlávek, performing works by Smetana at the Auditori de Barcelona.

Composer Bedrich Smetana wrote the My Fatherland (Má vlast) symphonic cycle as homage to the stories, legends, and landscapes of his native country. The second of six symphonic poems, Moldau is one of the most celebrated excerpts from the whole of the nineteenth‐century symphonic repertoire. In his other symphonies, we find tributes to one of the creators of the form including, Franz Liszt, whom the composer had heard play, and with whom he developed a great friendship.

Smetana's universe of the historical and natural is one that explores the legends of the Bohemian castles, of waters and rivers filled with imagined mermaids which continues to surprise the listener as does the articulation of the myths upon which the homeland was established (such as the story of the woman, Árka, a moral tale about female domination by males).

Once again, nature and history are used mutually through sounds to tell our collective history. The result is a masterpiece.
