The search for freedom is an important theme in the work of writer Jan Brokken. Among other things he wrote a book about the Russian refugee pianist Youri Egorov. BN De Stem called him an 'incomparable storyteller' — something that Brokken does in theatres more and more often. With the Berlage Saxophone Quartet he is working on the special project De weg naar de vrijheid (The Road to Freedom). Fragments from Brokken's work enter into a relationship with music from the Berlage CD In Search of Freedom, such as works by Mussorgsky, Shostakovich and Eisler.
