'What particularly pleases me about Orlando,' declared René Jacobs in 2012,'is that, in comparison with the composer's 40 or so other Italian operas, this work offers a lot of new music. We know, after all, that Handel was a master of borrowing musical ideas to later recycle and transform them completely.'

Orlando was premiered in London in 1733 with an anonymous libretto inspired by the Italian poet Ariosto. A soldier in Charlemagne's army, Orlando falls hopelessly in love with the pagan princess Angelica, whose heart belongs to Medoro.
