Henry Purcell, The Fairy Queen

Sobre o Evento

A performance of great delicacy and refinement, the original and multifaceted production has been enchanting audiences worldwide with its unique blend of music and breath‐taking acrobatic feats.

A semi‐opera by Purcell, The Fairy Queen has retained an extreme flexibility of rendition, in masterful hands tending to become a unique spectacle. This also holds true for the version created by Philip Pickett, the celebrated conductor of the New London Consort and one of the world’s most prominent specialists in the interpretation of early music, and the brilliant Mexican director Mauricio García Lozano. In concert with notable interpreters of early music, singers and circus artists, a compelling and thought‐provoking production has emerged. Set in 17th century Arcadia, the story is imbued with magic, myth and eroticism. A mirror to contemporary society, the singers embody the (stereo-)types of present‐day moralities, e.g. the defiant career woman, the reticent gay teacher and the handsome, yet unreliable idler.

Metaphorically, the travel to Arcadia is an inward journey, a passage to one’s better, ideal self.
