François‐Xavier Roth conducts the Boulez Ensemble in three very different works, each of which represents a pivotal moment in the career of the composer.

Mozart's quartet for oboe and strings was a stepping stone to his tenure as an independant professional composer. Pierre Boulez wrote Le Marteau sans maître at the age of 30, and it became one of his signature works. Schönberg's Chamber Symphony marks the threshold from his Late Romantic period into atonal music.
