Initially intended to be an opera, Schumann drew enthusiastically on the Persian legend of an air spirit — a Peri — who must bring the blood of a hero, the sigh of a maiden, and the tear of a repentant sinner to win back its place in Paradise. Regarded at the time as a major achievement, winning the approval even of Richard Wagner, the work is now rarely heard, but its rewards are rich.
