Coppélia, based on stories E.T.A. Hoffmann is one of the great ballets straddling the Parisian and Russian ballet schools.

With libretto by the great E.T.A. Hoffmann, and music by Léo Delibes, it describes the adventures of Swanilda, Franz, Dr Coppelius and the mysterious Coppélia, the lead characters from the first of the two programmes presented at the Festival by the English National Ballet, a top‐flight company long‐awaited in the Empordà. The company is now making its début under its artistic director, Spanish dancer Tamara Rojo, who will also be putting on her ballet shoes to dance for Peralada audiences.
