Em 1870, Richard Wagner compôs uma encantadora peça instrumental, Siegfried Idyll, para 13 instrumentos, como presente de aniversário para sua esposa, Cosima, que havia dado à luz recentemente seu querido filho, Siegfried. A estreia foi encenada como uma surpresa quando Cosima acordou na manhã de Natal em sua villa familiar em Tribschen, perto de Lucerna. Embora Idyll transmita uma intimidade terna e emocional, ela é intrigantemente combinada com uma obra contrastante: a Sétima Sinfonia de Bruckner, que é grandiosa e solene, projetada para cativar com seu som majestoso e o poder espiritual que exala.
