Xian Zhang is one of the few internationally acclaimed female conductors, and also one of few Chinese conductors with an international reputation. She will conduct two famous American works – Gershwin’s Symphonic Picture Porgy and Bess and Ferde Grofé’s Grand Canyon Suite, as well as the traditional Chinese work The Defeated Emperor arranged by the Pulitzer‐prize‐winning Chinese‐American composer Zhou Long.

Als oudste orkest van Azië bracht het Shanghai Symphony Orchestra westerse klassieke muziek naar China. Vandaag de dag is het nog steeds een orkest van wereldklasse dat internationaal bekende artiesten aantrekt terwijl het nog steeds zijn Chinese essentie behoudt: het Shanghai Symphony Orchestra is een baken van cultuur en kunst voor de stad Shanghai.
