Xerse (in concert): Theater an der Wien
Over het evenement
One of Francesco Cavalli's greatest successes will be presented at Theater an der Wien.
The opera's world premiere took place in 1654 at Teatro SS Giovanni e Paolo and was staged in nine different versions during Cavalli's lifetime alone. One of the greatest performances took place during the wedding ceremony of Louis XIV. and Maria Theresia in 1660.
The Persian King Xerse and his brother Arsamene both want to marry the same woman, Romilda, daughter of the abydian prince, Ariodate. Romilda prefers Arsamene, Xerse, however, sees her hand in marriage as part of a pact with Ariodate. In the end Romilda and Arsamene are allowed to marry after all.
