Venice's 'red‐haired priest' had at his disposal the young musicians of the Ospedale — the best ensemble in Venice at the time. The music written for their performances reflects the pure tones and virtuosic technique of the performers, as well as the sure theatrical instincts of the composer. Vivaldi's sense of drama was an attribute shared by Campra, also a prolific operatic writer, and the Frenchman's Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam offers a wide palette of sounds, textures and emotions.
